Weight Loss And Nutrition: Getting It Right

Weight loss and nutrition seem to be at odds with each other in fad diets.

To loose weight fast requires a significant drop in Kcal or calories consumed. And here is where the problem lies.

The Kcal is a measure of potential energy of the food. Yet, the food also contains nutrients. So, you need to reduce the calories while still getting the nutrients your body needs.

Why? I mean why not just quickly loose your weight and then worry about nutrition?

Because you will be making the weight loss far more difficult than need be. And you will suffer low energy, the blues and lack of mental alertness.

Let me explain...

You have weight you want to loose, let's say 20 pounds. The body is used to this amount of weight.

Then you drastically or even not so drastically, lower calories. If you have done this without considering the link between weight loss and nutrition, your body will go into a protective starvation mode.

A response that goes back to our 'hunter and gatherer' days. The body would protect itself from starvation by lowering the metabolic rate. Then if food arrives, it is horded by the body. Not wasting any, because it doesn't know when more food will arrive.

An example is when my mother once went down to 800 calories and didn't loose an ounce. Not until she increased her calories again did she notice any difference.

Alright, so how do you loose weight?

Plan your meals so that you still get all the elements of food you need. That is carbohydrates, fat and protein.

Each of these components contain nutrients your body needs. Yes, even fat. Fat has essential fatty acids. These are used by every body system. In fact, just consuming the right fats can help you loose weight.

I have used Tonalin CLA (Tonalin is a registered trademark). A supplement that you can pick up at most health food stores.

Don't over use protein either. You do need protein, however too much is a strain to your body to handle.

Go ahead and lower your calories. The best way is to remove the empty calories. That would be those foods with no or limited nutritional value.

Section targetingEat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Preferably organic food because of the growing methods used. Vegetables have nutrients your body needs. And they come already packaged in the right balance to aid absorption of those nutrients.

When you take weight loss and nutrition together you significantly increase your chances of success. And even better than that is you end up feeling healthier too.
