Sustainable Agriculture and Organic Food

Section targetingSustainable agriculture uses methods that maintain an ecological balance with the environment. It is a method that can be continued indefinitely because natural resources are not depleted.

Organic food production recognizes that soil is alive. It has nutrients that need to be in balance. Organic farming utilizes methods to maintain the health of the soil, like crop rotation, tilling methods and compost. Chemical pesticides are not permitted.

Crops grown in nutrient rich soil are themselves healthy, nutrient rich and naturally resistant to pests and disease.

Genetic engineering is not permitted in organic food production. And, why would they need it? The plants are naturally healthy, nutritious and resistant to pests and disease.

You can choose organic foods to ensure you don't eat genetically engineered foods. Labeling of GE foods is voluntary and an estimated 70% of processed foods have ge ingredients.

Conventional farming methods cause a depletion of soil nutrients. As a result unhealthy plants are susceptible to pests and disease. So, as a solution, pesticides and herbicides are used. And then ge seeds are brought in to be herbicide resistant.

Now, what if only sustainable methods in agriculture were used? In that case would chemical herbicides, pesticides or ge crops even be necessary?

You support traditional sustainable farming practices by buying organic food. And,you benefit from the high nutrient content. A win win situation.

By applying sustainable agriculture practices to your own vegetable gardening, you would also have healthier soils and healthier plants. Julie Villani takes you step by step through creating an organic vegetable garden. Read my review of her e-book.
